January and February should be the time to check the hives are not damaged or blocked and to check the food levels (but do not open the hive – just heft it for weight).  When the weather warms a little, put fondant into the hive if food stores are getting low.  On a warm day, look for signs of activity at the entrance – pollen being collected is an excellent sign that the queen is doing her stuff!  Start getting your equipment into good order – the season will soon be starting!
